See over 95% of endemic birds in one spot while you picnic – Sinharaja Rainforest – Deniyaya Side

3 Hours

Wander through 3 unique trails inside a birding wonderland, at the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, Sinharaja Rainforest. Witness the world-famous bird wave with a whopping 147 different species, while enjoying a forest picnic.

Why should you book this trip?

  • With more than 95% of Sri Lanka’s endemic birds found here, bird watching in Sinharaja is a phenomenal experience to have. More than 147 species have been recorded to date.To name a few commonly sighted birds: the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red Faced Malkoha, Grey Hornbill and White Headed Starling. About 13% of the birds are migratory, coming in for their winter break.
  • Over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies are found in Sinharaja.
  • Besides birding in Sinharaja, watch out for the Sambhur, the most common deer species and the Mouse-deer. Leopards are very seldom sighted, but their frequent presence has been confirmed by tracks and other signs. The most commonly seen primate is the purple-faced leaf monkey. In contrast, the Brown Mongoose and the Golden-palm Civet have been occasionally sighted.
  • The rainforest is habitat to more than 60% of Sri Lanka’s endemic trees, some of which are considered rare.

Tour in Brief

Day 1 :

You will first meet up with the Sri Lanka Day Tours Represenatative and your birding safari guide at Deniyaya Town from where we will arrange the transportation from Deniyaya Town to Kurulugala Entrance Gate which is 40 minutes drive.

The morning tour is the best for bird watching, ideally to start between 6.00 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. and the evenig walk is from 3.00pm to 6.00pm

While bird watching in Sinharaja, you will have opportunities to relax and indulge in once-in-a-lifetime photography.

Your guide will take you through man-made trails as well.

After bird watching and walking for two hours, you will head for the waterfalls, elusively hidden in the Sinharaja Rainforest.

You can decide on how far you are going to walk inside the jungle depending on your capacity. You can have your lunch once you come out of jungle or ask us to organise you a picnic meal so you can enjoy the meals during the picnic. The reserve is only 21 km (13 mi) from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic Purple-faced Langur.

An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and the noisy Orange-billed Babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Reptiles include the endemic Green pit viper and Hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic Common Birdwing butterfly and the inevitable leeches.

After 3 hours trekking, you will be back at the entrance finishing the tour.

Very kind, helpful and funny guide. He really knew his stuff and clearly loved the forest. He gave us a superb 6 hour trek showing us many plants, birds and animals. A good guide will make or break your rainforest experience. We saw plenty of guides who looked like they were doing an average job. Nelum did an excellent job.

We booked a Sinharaja tour with Sri Lanka Day tours and everything was arranged well in advance. We came to Deniyaya Town from where we were transported to the Forest, did the guided tour in the forest. We were offered a nice picnic style lunch by our local guides who are knowledgeable and showed us many birds, lizards, plants, snakes and many more. Value for Money... Highly recommonded tour.
